
About Sam Witmer
Sam is an active teacher and performer of opera, musical theater, concert works, and choral music. He has performed roles including the title roles in Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, Mercutio in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, and Fred Graham in Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate. In November 2024, he originated the role of Joe Kavalier in IU Opera Theater’s world premiere of Mason Bates and Gene Scheer’s The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, a coproduction with the Metropolitan Opera.
As a concert soloist, Sam has performed the baritone/bass solos in works such as Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass, and Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, among others.
Sam is an avid composer of art song and choral music. In 2026, his song “Bird Raptures" received 2nd place at songSLAM Indiana, a competition presented by Sparks and Wiry Cries.
Sam is currently an Associate Instructor of Voice at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, where he is a third year DM voice student. He has previously taught at Marietta College, Ohio University and Hocking College. He received his Master of Music from The Eastman School of Music and his Bachelor of Music from Ohio University.
